Tarpon

Snook

Legal Limits
No other species of inshore gamefish can match the size, power or aerial acrobatics of the mighty Silver King.

Ranging in size from 8 to 180-pounds, tarpon can be caught in many different inshore environments of southwest Florida using a variety of baits and tackle.

Tarpon season in southwest Florida generally begins in April with the larger fish moving up the coast through Florida Bay to the southernmost edge of the Everglades. During this special time of year, big tarpon can be targeted with natural and artificial baits near the mouths of picturesque brackish-water rivers.

The months of May, June and July are peak tarpon season. Warm water along the beaches, in the passes and in the shallow bays of southwest Florida create ideal conditions for those who dream of catching world-record tarpon on flies and light spin and plug tackle.

After August, small tarpon make their way into the rivers and creeks of the deep backcountry. Targeting these 10 to 60-pound fish on light-tackle is perhaps the most exciting way to enjoy the sheer strength and aerial acrobatics of this peerless predator.
